Be Careful - Wild animals can be very dangerous, especially if they are sick.  Never try to pick one up.  If you see one then call an adult.

This porcupine's name is Humphrey.  He had his picture in the November 1986 National Wildlife magazine.  He was one of the very first animals at the rehab center.

Porcupines do not shoot their quills.

Porcupines live for about 15 years.  An average adult is about 30 inches long and weighs about 15 pounds.  Their tails are about 11 inches long and it helps them balance when they climb trees.  Porcupines walk very slowly.

Do you think that "Stickers" is a good name?

This little "quill pig" had an appropriate name.  He was named "Stickers".  He was seen on a National Geographic television show.

They have about 30,000 quills that normally lay flat along their body.  When a porcupine is defending itself, or when it is frightened, the quills stand up straight.

  • Jack, the Belgian draft horse had 10 quills in his nose.  He was not very happy when the rancher pulled them out.

  • Our new dog "Hugger" got 7 quills in her nose.  We took her to the veterinarian.  They gave her medicine so that it would not hurt when they pulled the quills out.

This little baby stayed at the rehab center for 3 months.

I look sweet and cuddley but you better not touch me.

Porcupines came to North America from South America about 2,500,000 years ago.
